I was wondering if anyone has any tips for success for sanchin breathing kata. I have just started learning it and I have seen a few others do the kata and I am kinda hung up on effective breathing. I think in time it will all work out, but i thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Thanks

First and foremost, listen to your Sensei. If you are new to karate or new to this kata I would suggest the following: look, listen and learn by observing your Sensei or the Senior black belts in your class. Like anything else, you must practice the breathing correctly. Correctly in our school is in deep through your nose and down into the tanden area, which is a couple of inches below the navel, and then out through your mouth. When inhaling think of the breath as going in through your nose, up and over your head, down your spine, around your buttocks, up and around the groin area and into the tanden. The exhale is exactly the opposite except that the air is expelled through the mouth. You must expel every bit of the air that you have taken in. It takes years to perfect the breathing in Sanchin kata so be patient. Again, this could be different to a degree in your school so ask your Sensei.

Sanchin kata is one of the best katas to practice. It can be very invigorating. It also wil lead to new levels of focus. I do this kata before any tourniments, even if it is not one I will compete with, because it allows me total focus...mind, body and spirit. I usually do this kata when we do local Black Belt demos at local schools, and my son kicks, punches, breaks boards on me...the kids love it...and at almost 56 years of age, it makes me feel much younger. And, to be honest, it is just fun to do!
