Does anyone know where the katas gensho or gesaku-sho came from?
Any info would be appreciated.

| I've not heard of "gensho", however if you mean "tensho" it is accredited to Miyagi Chojun. It is believed to be a form of the older Southern China kata "rokkishu." |

Tensho (転掌, テンショウ) was created in 1921 as "softer sanchin" by Chojun Miyagi to balance Go aspect of Heishugata (Sanchin-kata) with Ju variation for Heishugata. Tensho means "revolving hands." It is a combination of hard dynamic tension with deep breathing and soft flowing hand movements, and is very characteristic of the Goju-ryu style. Some styles calls it as Rokkishu and it was created from some movements taken from Hakutsuru, although more careful analysis suggest that it might be Miyagi's personal interpretation of Kakufa-kata that was in Higaonna's syllabus but is omitted in Goju-ryu now.

I have the genealogy of Tensho.
Gesaku-sho and Gensho (sometimes spelled Ginghoi)
are the only two I have not found any genealogy on.
I have found Gensho listed On some shito-ryu docs
as a godan level kata but no history at all.
The way they are taught ( by Hanshi Angel) make me believe they are both
katas for public schools by Yamaguchi G. hence the alternate bunkai
however I have nothing to support my opinion.
I would like to hear what others think. I have studied these katas for many years
and I would love to know where we got them. |

In reading all of this, I got curious, since Gesaku-sho is my favorite kata. Did some online research and came up with this site for a USA Goju dojo, that is listing the origin of the kata as Peter Urban :
